What are the rules about Public Domain Music?

I know that songs that were made before 1922 are considered public domain, so copyright law does not protect them. But can I download let's say Mozart or Beethoven songs for free and legally and use it commercially, or because they are being played by modern orchestra's by let's say the New York Philharmonic or whatever that they are still under copyright?
