Who was the 1st African-American in the NHL, I know Willie O'Ree was the 1st black, but he was Canadian?

Just wondering if maybe Mike Grier is the 1st from U.S.A. to play in NHL, all before him i think were Canadian...help me out if u can, thx in advanced.
